Canadian Youth on thoughts about the USA

Shocking and how wrong!

YOUNG PEOPLE (MAYBE SOME OLD ALSO) IN
CANADA HAVE IDEAS ABOUT THE USA
Tonight March 23rd 2010, I was surprised and disappointed in a
Canadian survey, especially in the University age population,
that asked questions as to how they perceived the USA. The
answers were quite shocking. I will not repeat any of them. Many
answers came from the idea that USA people are ignorant of
anything outside their country. Wellll..... maybe there was some
truth in that back in the 1960s (as I travelled parts of the USA)
but I think the modern schooling and a "much smaller world today"
that space-age technology has brought to everyone over the last
30 years, has changed that old idea.
The thoughts of many young persons in Canada concerning the USA,
are really the result of they themselves being ignorant of the
USA people. When asked, "Well what do you know of Kansas, or New
Mexico?" There were just as many blank looks, as probably asking
a USA young person what they know about Saskatchewan, or New
Brunswick.
The CBC TV-cast on this subject did finish with a fact probably
most Canadians do not know, and might even be surprised to learn:
The USA per chapiter give more to charities and sending help to
people around the world, than the per chapiter of Canadians, or
just about ANY country in the world. This is not because the USA
is the riches nation on earth, for this giving is based on per
chapiter. Some could argue, well the USA has more millionaires
and billionaires than any other country. But nevertheless the USA
is a mighty giving country. It has been a HUGE physical blessing
to many nations of the world.
It was also interesting that when USA people were asked questions
about Canada and Canadians there were never any negative replies.
Wow Canadian young people, maybe you have something to learn from
your friends to the south of us.
From 1961, when I came to Canada from Britain, I've travelled
just about all over the USA for weeks at a time; I lived and
worked in Florida for 4 years. I can honestly say, as far as the
average person goes, I never found ANY major difference between
the USA people and the Canadian people, once across that border
line the people of North America are fundamentally the same, and
I guess so, for we are brother peoples - the nations of the
Western world have our ancestry in the Celtic/Anglo/Saxon
peoples.
So Canadian young people do a little more travelling in the land
of our brothers to the south, you'll find they ain't really any
different than yourself.
......
I know just about nothing concerning the somewhat famous Ann
Coulter from the USA; maybe your thinking "Where have you been?"
Well I only have so many hours in a day and I'm not going to
spend too much time, if any, following what Ann Coulter has to
say. She came to give a speech or debate or whatever, down
eastern Canada, the protesters were so large and noisy they had
to cancel the event. Now the news said she is in Calgary tomorrow
- March 24th. I guess we'll see if the protesters (depending how
many) will shut her down from speaking here in the town where I
live. I'll keep you posted.
......
Half a dozen children were killed in China today by some "nut"
guy with a knife as they came to start their school day. He had a
history of mental illness. How tragic that such things happen.
