SUPER  BUGS  ARE     HERE!!

The superbugs aren't coming; they're already here.

And antibiotic-resistant bacteria are spreading not just in rich countries but in the developing world too, according to a new report by the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy.

The 2015 State of the World's Antibiotics, published this week, is the latest and most comprehensive checkup of how antibiotics are faring around the globe. Since the discovery of penicillin, antibiotics have become a linchpin of modern medicine but growing bacterial resistance is threatening to return the world to the “dark ages of medicine,” as British Prime Minister David Cameron warned last year.

While antibiotic resistance is a natural phenomenon — bacteria evolve to develop defences against threats in their environments — the process has been dramatically accelerated by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, both by humans and food animals, which are often given these drugs to promote growth.

At stake is not just the ability to treat deadly diseases, but to conduct surgeries, perform organ transplants and safely treat cancer patients, who rely on antibiotics to keep infections at bay.
