TYPOLOGY PART TWO
THE PERSON AND WORK
OF JESUS CHRIST
ATONEMENT
Taken from the book "The Feasts of the Lord" by Robert
Thompson, pages 140-147
" Next to the Passover, Christ is seen most clearly in the
Day of Atonement. He is our great High Priest. He entered pasted
the veil and stood before the holy of holiest. Unlike the high
priest of Israel, Christ did not offer the blood of a young bull
for Himself and His household, and then the blood of a goat for
the sins of the rest of the people of Israel.
Christ entered into heaven itself, and with His own precious
blood, through the eternal Spirit, purified the holy furnishings
of the true tabernacle of God in heaven (in type).....It was
not possible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away
sins. But through the offering of the body and blood of Jesus
Christ we have been made holy forever, provided we truly
apprehend the grace of God, and do not neglect our salvation.
Without the shedding of blood there is no remission, no
cancellation, of sin.....Through the blood of Christ, and only
through His blood, has the mortgage which Satan hold on us been
paid. Christ's blood has now been sprinkled before the Father,
atonement has been made, and it is sufficient for every man,
woman, boy, and girl upon the face of the earth if they will just
accept it.....When Christ declares us guiltless and legally free
from the kingdom of darkness, it is His precious blood which
backs up the declaration. God has said that the blood of Christ
has paid the price. There is no other payment which God will
accept for our sins......
On the sixth day of creation, God made man in His own image;
male and female made He them.....Adam and Eve taken together, are
the 'man' whom God made in His image.....
Adam indeed was a rough and immature image of the living
God. But Christ was in His EXPRESS image. The church, the bride
of Christ, is being fashioned from the substance of Christ, and
is being made for Him. The members of the body of Christ are
themselves, as individuals, in the image of God. Christ and His
wife, taken together, are the complete fulfillment of the
declaration of the sixth day: 'Let us make man in our
image.'......"
(The feast day of Atonement is the 5th feast of the Lord,
not the fifth annual Sabbath, but it is the 5th feast of a total
of 7 annual feasts of God, the first four being, Passover,
Unleavened Bread, Pentecost, Trumpets. The number FIVE is the
number for GRACE as used by God in His word, the Bible. This we
have shown and proved in other studies. It is not just by
happenstance that the feast of Atonement is number FIVE of the
feasts of the Lord. The Day of Atonement is the picture of the
full and complete grace of God being shown towards mankind,
towards those made in His very image, for the purpose of being
made like unto Himself through His grace as planned and
manifested by the saving Lamb of God, the Christ, the Messiah -
Keith Hunt).
Continuing with the words of Thompson:
" The Ark of the Covenant represents the Lord Jesus Christ
as the Commander-in-chief of the hosts of heaven. The golden
Altar of Incense stood directly in line with the ark, signifying
that as soon as the prayers of the saints had reached the
required strength, and had been tempered together with the
substance of Christ, then the Lord Jesus will return. He will
come as the Redeemer, 'Unto those who look for Him He will appear
the second time without sin unto salvation' (Heb.9:28).
What a time of glory! the coming of Christ and the setting
up of the Kingdom of God was typified by the tabernacle of David.
The ark was removed from its resting place in the holy of
holiest, and was put in a tent in Zion. This was the Tabernacle
of David, and it speaks of the time of the end when the Lord
Jesus returns with His fighting men to bring the kingdoms of this
world under the rule of the Lord Jesus.
The ark represents war! When the ark goes forward it is God
arising, and His enemies are scattered before Him. The ark leads
the way across Jordan. The ark is the presence of God....God is
moving towards His enemies. When we Christians lift up the
everlasting doors of our heart and allow the Lord of hosts to
have His way in us and with us, we are moving the Lord God
towards His inheritance, towards His enemies.
Man cannot be made completely in the image of God until the
last traces of sin have been removed, the last bondage broken.
CHRIST IS GOING TO ACCOMPLISH THESE FINAL ACTS OF REDEMPTION
AT HIS COMING. When He appears, we will be LIKE HIM, and we shall
see Him as He is. This is that which is PERFECT, and it is
coming. It is the Lord Jesus Christ, returning to FINISH His work
in us so that we are in His EXPRESS IMAGE.
Christ Himself is our Day of Atonement. All that the word
ATONEMENT signifies....is found in Christ Himself. For the word
means PROPITIATION, COVERING, PACIFYING, RECONCILIATION, RELEASE,
REMISSION, FORGIVENESS - in short, all that is required to bring
us all the way to the throne of glory from our total slavery to
darkness. All this is included in the concept of atonement. The
complete redemption of our spirit, soul, and body is included in
the atonement made by Christ. It is all included in Him....
The second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ will be a
CONSUMING FIRE upon all the works of unrighteousness:
' For, behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven;
and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be
stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, says the
Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch'
(Mal.4:1).
But that day shall bring blessing and edification to those
who fear the Lord:
' But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of
righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and you shall go
forth, and grow up as calves of the stall' (Mal.4:2)......
The trumpet announcing the year of jubilee is blown on the
Day of Atonement, proclaiming the fact that in the atonement made
by Christ there is not only FORGIVENESS OF SINS but also total
DELIVERANCE from the POWER and effects of sin.
' Then shall you cause the TRUMPET of the JUBILEE to sound
on the TENTH DAY of the SEVENTH month, in the day of ATONEMENT
shall you make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. And
you shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim LIBERTY
throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it
shall be a JUBILEE unto you; and you shall return every man unto
his possession, and you shall return every man unto his family'
(Lev.23:9,10).
Christ Himself is the millennium. He is the peace of God;
the rule of God; the King of the Kingdom of God. As Christ grows
within us and brings into subjection every single one of our
deeds, words, motives, and imaginations, one might say, in this
sense, that the millennium is growing within us. This is a
PERSONAL millennium, not the Kingdom-wide millennium which will
commence with the coming of the Lord Jesus. It becomes true in
our hearts that the tame beast can lie down in safety with the
wild beast, and the child can play on the adder's den. It is true
within us that there is nothing which hurts or destroys. It can
be truly said of each person of whom such inner peacefulness has
been established, that he or she is a firstfruits of the
millennium. "
(What has often been overlooked by many in the Church of God
is that the Bible, especially the NT, talks about the Kingdom of
God being NOW, being at hand, being in the present reality. The
Kingdom of God was established when Christ came and conquered
Satan in the flesh, when the Spirit came into the hearts and
minds as a begettal for Christians, making them into the very
Sons of God, a part of the very Family or Kingdom of God. The
Kingdom of God is the Family of God, and Christians, since the
feast of Pentecost in Acts 2, have been the very children of God,
and so the family of God, His Kingdom. As Christians now, we are
translated or moved into the family or Kingdom of Christ - see
Col.1:14. We as Christians now, are the children of God but there
is more fulfillment to come. We are not yet what we shall be
(see 1 John 3:1-3). The Kingdom of God is yet to come in that
fulfillment, when the Sons of God will be liberated from the
flesh and glorified into the Spirit, at the coming of Christ with
a resurrection to glory. Then Christ and the saints will rule and
reign on this earth for a 1000 millennium rule of jubilee rest
and liberty. All of this is covered in other studies of mine -
Keith Hunt).
Back to the words of Robert Thompson:
" Unfortunately, Satan is able to stir up the peoples of the
earth so that they consistently refuse to accept the peaceful
ways of the Lord Jesus. Therefore He is coming in the fulfillment
of the Day of Atonement, to CRUSH Satan under the feet of the
church and to destroy sinners out of the earth. No power in
heaven or upon the earth can prevent the Lord Jesus from taking
over at the appointed hour of the father. God is in the process
of bringing into subjection to Christ all of His enemies......The
defenses of devils and men will evaporate like water in an oven.
The Lion of the tribe of Judah will be as grizzly with her cubs.
Those who are in rebellion against His will shall be sought out
and destroyed. The Head of the church will make His
appearance as King of kings and Lord of lords, and those who
resist will scream in terror and anguish for the mountains of
rocks to fall upon them and hide them from the wrath of God's
Lamb.....
He is Lord! He has made an atonement for every person. All
who choose to do so may come under His protection. But for those
who refuse His rule there is a fate worse than physical death; it
is eternal death in the lake of fire. The Lord Jesus is the good
Shepherd of the Twenty-third Psalm. The Lord Jesus is the Lord
strong and mighty in battle of the Twenty-fourth Psalm.
As we know the good Shepherd we shall also know the Lord of
armies. The good Shepherd exemplifies all that we look for in the
shepherd: He is gentle, kind, watchful, wisely guiding us
into green pastures and besides still waters. The Lord of the
armies exemplifies all that we look for in a commander of
warriors: He is mighty, cunning, fierce, tireless, and a terror
to His enemies whom He destroys until every trace of resistance
has been demolished.
In the Lord Jesus Christ is contained all that is signified
by the Day of Atonement........"
