Contrary to the assumption that such prayer forms were uniquely Byzantine, the Celtic liturgical and monastic legacy is deeply intertwined with Eastern Christianity\u2014particularly Egypt, Palestine, Syria, and Asia Minor. This article traces the historical roots, original forms, and current usage of the Jesus Prayer within the Celtic Church, emphasizing its biblical and apostolic character.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<h3>The Jesus Prayer: Original Forms in the East<\/h3>\n<p>The earliest known written forms of the Jesus Prayer are preserved in the Greek monastic tradition:<\/p>\n<h4>\u2728 <strong>Standard Early Greek Form<\/strong><\/h4>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u039a\u1f50\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5 \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03ad, \u03a5\u1fd0\u1f04 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u0398\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6, \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03cc\u03bd \u03bc\u03b5.<\/strong> <em>Kyrie I\u0113sous Christe, Huie tou Theou, ele\u0113son me.<\/em> <strong>Translation<\/strong>: \u201cLord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This version is found throughout the Eastern Church and still used on Mount Athos today.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<h3 data-start=\"400\" data-end=\"475\"><strong data-start=\"404\" data-end=\"475\">St Diadochos of Photiki and the Early Tradition of Ceaseless Prayer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"1609\">Long before the Hesychasts of Mount Athos, the 5th-century Bishop <strong data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"570\">St Diadochos of Photiki<\/strong> articulated the principle of unceasing remembrance of Jesus\u2019 Name. In his <em data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"669\">On Spiritual Knowledge<\/em> (Philokalia I), he wrote that when the mind is \u201cfixed upon the continual invocation of the Lord Jesus,\u201d divine grace dwells in the heart. His teaching reflects a much older rhythm of ceaseless prayer, already witnessed in the Acts of the Apostles, where deacons such as St Stephen served the people so that the Apostles might \u201ccontinue steadfastly in prayer and in the ministry of the word\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Acts6%3A4\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 6:4<\/a>). In the <em data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1819\">Philokalia<\/em> (Vol. IV) he prescribed the disciplined posture and breathing that would define Athonite usage:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1917\" data-end=\"2085\">\n<p data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"2085\">\u201cFrom early morning sit on a low stool\u2026 bow yourself down, and cry persistently, \u2018Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.\u2019 Then repeat, \u2018Son of God, have mercy on me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2087\" data-end=\"2098\">Greek text:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2099\" data-end=\"2162\">\n<p data-start=\"2101\" data-end=\"2162\">\u039a\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5 \u1f38\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u1fe6 \u03a7\u03c1\u03b9\u03c3\u03c4\u03ad, \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03cc\u03bd \u03bc\u03b5.<br data-start=\"2132\" data-end=\"2135\" \/>\u03a5\u1f31\u1f72 \u03c4\u03bf\u1fe6 \u0398\u03b5\u03bf\u1fe6, \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03cc\u03bd \u03bc\u03b5.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2537\">His disciple, <strong data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2203\">Patriarch Kallistos I<\/strong>, shortly after 1351, recorded the fuller form\u2014\u201cLord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner\u201d\u2014which spread throughout Greek and Slavic monasticism. Thus, Gregory did not invent the Jesus Prayer but <strong data-start=\"2415\" data-end=\"2427\">codified<\/strong> an ancient inheritance that had already circulated for centuries in both Eastern and Western monastic worlds.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2539\" data-end=\"2542\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"2544\" data-end=\"2605\"><strong data-start=\"2548\" data-end=\"2605\">The Jesus Prayer in the Celtic and Gallican Tradition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2607\" data-end=\"2872\">Because the Celtic Church drew deeply from Egyptian and Gallican monastic streams\u2014through Cassian, Honoratus, Martin of Tours, and Patrick\u2014it naturally shared this same spirituality of ceaseless invocation.
