It presents a historical, biblical, and patristic overview of <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1026\">Advent<\/strong>\u2014not merely as a preparation for Christmas, but as the season celebrating <strong data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1119\">the Incarnation<\/strong>, the moment in which <em data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1187\">\u201cthe Word was made flesh and dwelt among us\u201d<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/John1%3A14\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 1:14<\/a>). This study reflects the ancient testimony of the <strong data-start=\"1250\" data-end=\"1292\">Celtic, Gallican, Mozarabic, Ambrosian<\/strong>, und <strong data-start=\"1298\" data-end=\"1309\">Eastern<\/strong> churches, and challenges contemporary misconceptions that Advent is a late or pagan addition to the Christian faith.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1428\" data-end=\"1800\">Far from being a medieval invention, <strong data-start=\"1465\" data-end=\"1572\">Advent is rooted in apostolic instruction, apostolic chronology, and universal early-Christian practice<\/strong>, and strongly linked to the rhythm of the Israelite feasts fulfilled in Christ. It is our prayer that rediscovering these foundations will strengthen unity, deepen reverence, and renew devotion to Jesus Christ our God and King.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1802\" data-end=\"1805\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1850\"><strong data-start=\"1810\" data-end=\"1850\">I. THE BIBLICAL FOUNDATION OF ADVENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"1852\" data-end=\"1894\"><strong data-start=\"1856\" data-end=\"1894\">Christ Commands Seasons of Fasting<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"1979\">When questioned why His disciples did not fast as rigorously as others, Christ said:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2116\">\n<p data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2116\"><em data-start=\"1983\" data-end=\"2077\">\u201cThe days will come when the Bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.\u201d<\/em> (Matt. 9:15; cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Mark2%3A20\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 2:20<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Luke5%3A35\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 5:35<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2245\">In this statement, He establishes a <strong data-start=\"2154\" data-end=\"2178\">new covenant pattern<\/strong> in which fasting increases <strong data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2215\">after<\/strong> the Ascension, not decreases.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2247\" data-end=\"2300\"><strong data-start=\"2251\" data-end=\"2300\">Sacred Time Practiced in the Apostolic Church<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2327\">The New Testament records:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2541\">\n<li data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2373\">\n<p data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2373\"><strong data-start=\"2330\" data-end=\"2351\">corporate fasting<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Acts13%3A2-3\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 13:2\u20133<\/a>; <a class=\"bibleserver extern\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Acts14%3A23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14:23<\/a>),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2374\" data-end=\"2426\">\n<p data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2426\"><strong data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2400\">appointed gatherings<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Acts20%3A7\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 20:7<\/a>; 1 Cor. 16:2),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2427\" data-end=\"2484\">\n<p data-start=\"2429\" data-end=\"2484\"><strong data-start=\"2429\" data-end=\"2470\">instruction not to neglect assemblies<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Hebrews10%3A25\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heb. 10:25<\/a>),<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2485\" data-end=\"2541\">\n<p data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2541\"><strong data-start=\"2487\" data-end=\"2526\">freedom to honor days unto the Lord<\/strong> (Rom. 14:5\u20136).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2543\" data-end=\"2611\">Rather than abolishing holy days, Paul forbids <strong data-start=\"2590\" data-end=\"2600\">schism<\/strong> over them.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"2613\" data-end=\"2616\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"2618\" data-end=\"2668\"><strong data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"2668\">II. THE INCARNATION AS THE CENTER OF ADVENT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"2669\" data-end=\"2721\"><strong data-start=\"2673\" data-end=\"2721\">Mary the Ark of the Covenant &amp; Living Temple<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2723\" data-end=\"2868\">The earliest Fathers describe Mary as the <strong data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2776\">New Ark<\/strong> und <strong data-start=\"2781\" data-end=\"2791\">Temple<\/strong>, carrying the presence of the Living God in her body. ADVENT IN THE APOSTOLIC CONSTITUTIONS &amp; CHURCH ORDERS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3875\" data-end=\"4071\">Das <strong data-start=\"3879\" data-end=\"3919\">Apostolic Constitutions (Didascalia)<\/strong>, an early Church text preserved in the East and valued as canonical witness to apostolic ecclesial practice, commands observance of the Nativity cycle:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4073\" data-end=\"4235\">\n<p data-start=\"4075\" data-end=\"4235\">**\u201cObserve the festival days; and first of all the birthday which you shall celebrate on the twenty-fifth of the ninth month; after which keep the Epiphany.\u201d**\u00b3<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4237\" data-end=\"4247\">And again:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4249\" data-end=\"4421\">\n<p data-start=\"4251\" data-end=\"4421\">**\u201cLet them rest on the festival of His birth, because on it the unexpected favor was granted to men, that Jesus Christ, the Word of God, was born of the Virgin Mary.\u201d**\u2074<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"4423\" data-end=\"4484\">Whatever calendar system is referenced, the witness is clear:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4485\" data-end=\"4649\">\n<li data-start=\"4485\" data-end=\"4555\">\n<p data-start=\"4487\" data-end=\"4555\">The feast of Christ\u2019s <strong data-start=\"4509\" data-end=\"4530\">Incarnation\/Birth<\/strong> was already established,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4556\" data-end=\"4607\">\n<p data-start=\"4558\" data-end=\"4607\"><strong data-start=\"4558\" data-end=\"4580\">Epiphany\/Theophany<\/strong> was linked directly to it,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4608\" data-end=\"4649\">\n<p data-start=\"4610\" data-end=\"4649\"><strong data-start=\"4610\" data-end=\"4648\">Fasting surrounded the celebration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr data-start=\"4651\" data-end=\"4654\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"4656\" data-end=\"4723\"><strong data-start=\"4659\" data-end=\"4723\">IV. ADVENT IN THE CELTIC, GALLICAN, AND MOZARABIC TRADITIONS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"4725\" data-end=\"4777\"><strong data-start=\"4729\" data-end=\"4777\">St. Martin\u2019s Lent \u2014 the 40-day Celtic Advent<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4778\" data-end=\"4928\">Before later Roman standardization, Advent was primarily a <strong data-start=\"4837\" data-end=\"4855\">forty-day fast<\/strong> beginning <strong data-start=\"4866\" data-end=\"4900\">St. Martin\u2019s Day (11 November)<\/strong> and ending at the Nativity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4930\" data-end=\"4970\">St. Perpetuus, Bishop of Tours, decreed:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4972\" data-end=\"5089\">\n<p data-start=\"4974\" data-end=\"5089\">*\u201cFrom St. Martin\u2019s Day to the Nativity of our Lord, fasting is to be observed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.\u201d*\u2075<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"5091\" data-end=\"5261\">This practice was universal throughout Gaul and the Celtic churches, including the foundations of <strong data-start=\"5189\" data-end=\"5197\">Iona<\/strong> und <strong data-start=\"5202\" data-end=\"5213\">Luxeuil<\/strong> through <strong data-start=\"5222\" data-end=\"5237\">St. Columba<\/strong> und <strong data-start=\"5242\" data-end=\"5260\">St. Columbanus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5263\" data-end=\"5285\"><strong data-start=\"5267\" data-end=\"5285\">St. Columbanus<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5286\" data-end=\"5365\">The Rule of Columbanus commands strict fasting as preparation for major feasts:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5366\" data-end=\"5471\">\n<p data-start=\"5368\" data-end=\"5471\">*\u201cLet us serve the Lord with fasting\u2026\u201d*\u2076<br data-start=\"5408\" data-end=\"5411\" \/>*\u201c\u2026by fasting we shall conquer, if our mind is humbled.\u201d*\u2077<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"5473\" data-end=\"5522\"><strong data-start=\"5477\" data-end=\"5522\">The December 18 Feast of the Annunciation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5523\" data-end=\"5690\">In the <strong data-start=\"5530\" data-end=\"5571\">Celtic, Gallican, and Mozarabic rites<\/strong>, the Annunciation was kept on <strong data-start=\"5602\" data-end=\"5617\">December 18<\/strong>, celebrating Christ\u2019s <strong data-start=\"5640\" data-end=\"5654\">Conception<\/strong>, not simply anticipating His birth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5692\" data-end=\"5815\">This remains preserved today in Mozarabic usage and certain Orthodox communities, including <strong data-start=\"5784\" data-end=\"5814\">the Celtic Orthodox Church<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"5817\" data-end=\"5820\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"5822\" data-end=\"5881\"><strong data-start=\"5825\" data-end=\"5881\">V. ADVENT IN THE EASTERN CHURCHES: THE NATIVITY FAST<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"5883\" data-end=\"6158\">All <strong data-start=\"5887\" data-end=\"5907\">Ostorthodox<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"5909\" data-end=\"5930\">Oriental Orthodox<\/strong>, und das <strong data-start=\"5940\" data-end=\"5971\">Assyrian Church of the East<\/strong> observe a <strong data-start=\"5982\" data-end=\"6006\">40-day Nativity Fast<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"6012\" data-end=\"6039\">November 15\u2013December 24<\/strong>, known as <strong data-start=\"6050\" data-end=\"6067\">Philip\u2019s Fast<\/strong>, emphasizing repentance, almsgiving, and preparation for the manifestation of the God-Man.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"6160\" data-end=\"6163\" \/>\n<h2 data-start=\"6165\" data-end=\"6228\"><strong data-start=\"6168\" data-end=\"6228\">VI.
