What was widely understood at the time as a<br \/>\n<strong>right-wing, nationalist-oriented revolt<\/strong> against Viktor Yanukovych\u2019s corrupt, Kremlin-aligned regime<br \/>\nhas been reframed in many right-leaning circles as a <em>left-liberal, globalist protest movement<\/em> \u2014 and even as<br \/>\na justification for siding with Russia.This reinterpretation dovetails with a misleading narrative that casts <strong>Russia<\/strong> as a<br \/>\n\u201cconservative bulwark\u201d against Western liberalism. As we have shown in earlier Watchman News analyses, including<br \/>\n<a title=\"The Illusion of Russian Nationalism: Communist Continuity, the War on Faith, and the Strategic Occupation of Germany\" href=\"https:\/\/watchman.news\/de\/2025\/07\/illusion-of-russian-nationalism-communism\/\"><br \/>\nThe Illusion of Russian Nationalism<br \/>\n<\/a>,<br \/>\n<a title=\"The Russian Sympathizer Trap to Disarm Traditional Conservatives\" href=\"https:\/\/watchman.news\/de\/2023\/03\/the-russian-sympathizer-trap-to-disarm-traditional-conservatives\/\"><br \/>\nThe Russian Sympathizer Trap to Disarm Traditional Conservatives<br \/>\n<\/a>, und<br \/>\n<a title=\"Russian Red Invasion vs Nationalism\" href=\"https:\/\/watchman.news\/de\/2022\/05\/russian-red-invasion-vs-nationalism-a-rebuttal-against-those-who-say-russia-is-for-nationalism-and-ukraine-is-for-globalism\/\"><br \/>\nRussian Red Invasion vs Nationalism<br \/>\n<\/a>,<br \/>\nmodern <strong>Russian nationalism<\/strong> is less genuine patriotism and more a tool of<br \/>\n<strong>statist globalism, communist continuity, and imperial strategy<\/strong>.This article seeks to restore clarity: the original <strong>Euromaidan movement<\/strong> was deeply infused with<br \/>\n<strong>Ukrainian conservative and nationalist elements<\/strong>, and the soldiers fighting on the ground today were<br \/>\nand are motivated primarily by <strong>national identity<\/strong>, <strong>Souver\u00e4nit\u00e4t<\/strong>, and resistance to<br \/>\nforeign domination \u2014 not by abstract Western liberalism.<\/p>\n<h2>1. The Roots of Euromaidan: A Nationalist-Oriented Uprising<\/h2>\n<p>The wave of protests known as <strong>Euromaidan<\/strong> began in November 2013 after President<br \/>\n<strong>Viktor Yanukovych<\/strong> refused to sign the EU\u2013Ukraine Association Agreement, choosing instead to tilt<br \/>\nUkraine further into Moscow\u2019s orbit. What started as protests on Kyiv\u2019s Independence Square quickly grew into a<br \/>\nmass movement against a corrupt, Kremlin-aligned regime.<\/p>\n<p>From early on, it was not just liberal students waving EU flags. It was heavily reinforced by<br \/>\n<strong>Ukrainian right-wing nationalist groups<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Right Sector<\/strong> \u2013 a coalition of nationalist organizations that became one of the most organized and confrontational forces on the streets, especially in clashes with riot police and internal troops.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Svoboda<\/strong> \u2013 a nationalist party whose members and sympathizers were a visible part of the Maidan protests and later of volunteer battalions.<\/li>\n<li>Other regional <strong>nationalist brigades<\/strong> and veterans\u2019 formations that supplied the early \u201cself-defense\u201d units and later frontline fighters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Months before the final escalation on the Maidan, <strong>right-wing Ukrainians<\/strong> were already organizing<br \/>\n<strong>roadblocks, seizing local government buildings, and physically resisting the Yanukovych regime<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThey were the backbone of the street resistance, not an afterthought.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, even Russian propaganda implicitly admitted this reality. At least<br \/>\n<strong>two of the three most visible opposition currents<\/strong> were labeled \u201cneo-Nazi\u201d or \u201cfascist\u201d by the<br \/>\nKremlin precisely because they were openly <strong>nationalist, conservative, and anti-imperial<\/strong>. It would<br \/>\ntake nearly a decade \u2014 especially after Zelensky\u2019s rise \u2014 for outside commentators to begin repainting the entire<br \/>\nmovement as primarily \u201cliberal\u201d or \u201cleft-wing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>2. How Moscow Framed Maidan: \u201cNazis,\u201d Memory Laws, and Weaponized History<\/h2>\n<p>From the first days of the conflict, the Kremlin\u2019s narrative did <em>not<\/em> center on fighting \u201cliberalism.\u201d<br \/>\nIt centered on \u201cfighting the <strong>Right Sector<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cfighting the <strong>fascists<\/strong>,\u201d and<br \/>\n\u201cfighting the <strong>Nazis<\/strong> in Kyiv.\u201d Russian media and officials repeated the charge that Maidan was a<br \/>\n\u201cNazi coup,\u201d and the \u201cdenazification of Ukraine\u201d has become the main justification for Russia\u2019s ongoing war.<\/p>\n<p>This rhetoric has to be seen alongside Russia\u2019s system of <strong>WWII memory laws<\/strong> and its<br \/>\n<strong>Law Against Rehabilitation of Nazism<\/strong>, which criminalize reevaluations of Soviet history and<br \/>\nsuppress dissenting historical narratives. The Kremlin uses these laws selectively to silence critics and to frame<br \/>\nany national resistance \u2014 in Ukraine or in Russia \u2014 as \u201cfascist\u201d by definition.<\/p>\n<p>Mit anderen Worten, <strong>\u201cNazi\u201d in Kremlin language often means \u201cnon-submissive nationalist\u201d<\/strong>. The label is<br \/>\npolitical and ideological, not descriptive. Genuine Ukrainian nationalism \u2014 which insists on sovereignty, national<br \/>\nlanguage, and a distinct political path \u2014 is thus treated as inherently illegitimate and dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>This fits the broader pattern we documented in<br \/>\n<a title=\"The Illusion of Russian Nationalism article\" href=\"https:\/\/watchman.news\/de\/2025\/07\/illusion-of-russian-nationalism-communism\/\"><br \/>\nThe Illusion of Russian Nationalism<br \/>\n<\/a>, where the historical legacy of <strong>communist control<\/strong>,<br \/>\n<strong>centralized propaganda<\/strong>, und <strong>state-engineered ideology<\/strong> never truly disappeared,<br \/>\nbut simply changed costumes for a new era.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Nationalist Forces Did the Heavy Lifting but Did Not Capture the State<\/h2>\n<p>It is crucial to distinguish between those who provided the muscle and organizing power on the streets and those who<br \/>\nultimately governed the post-Maidan state.<\/p>\n<p>W\u00e4hrend <strong>Right Sector<\/strong>, <strong>Svoboda<\/strong>, and other nationalist groups played a central role in<br \/>\nthe confrontations and later in volunteer battalions during the first years of the<br \/>\n<strong>Russo-Ukrainian war<\/strong>, their <strong>electoral success remained limited<\/strong>. In the 2014<br \/>\npresidential and parliamentary elections, nationalist parties received only a small share of the vote and did not<br \/>\nbecome the dominant political control within Kyiv\u2019s institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The result is a paradox that outsiders often miss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Das <strong>frontline fighters and volunteer battalions<\/strong> frequently had nationalist or conservative motivations.<\/li>\n<li>Das <strong>political class<\/strong> that eventually consolidated power in Kyiv after Maidan grew increasingly liberal, globalist, and oligarchic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As time passed, the liberal and oligarchic elements strengthened their grip on the state, and nationalist parties<br \/>\nwere marginalized politically. The men who did the hardest fighting on the streets and at the front<br \/>\n<strong>did not gain proportional representation<\/strong>. Their blood was banked; their representation was not.<\/p>\n<h2>4. What Ukrainian Soldiers Are Actually Fighting For<\/h2>\n<p>Today, many Western conservatives assume that Ukrainians are \u201cfighting for Zelensky\u201d or for EU-style liberalism.<br \/>\nThat is a fundamental misunderstanding of the motivations on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is more nuanced:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of the early volunteers and present-day frontline fighters are motivated by <strong>Ukrainian nationalism<\/strong>, <strong>Orthodox and Christian identity<\/strong>, and a desire for a <strong>sovereign Ukrainian state<\/strong> free from Russian domination.<\/li>\n<li>Others are conscripts or mobilized men who do not share any particular ideological label but understand they are defending their homes and families.<\/li>\n<li>Almost none of them enlisted to be cannon-fodder for \u201cglobalism.\u201d They fight because they refuse to be ruled from Moscow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To say that these fighters are simply dying \u201cfor liberalism\u201d is not only misleading, it is a direct insult to those<br \/>\nwho stood on the Maidan with <strong>riot shields, helmets, and Molotov cocktails<\/strong>, and who later dug into<br \/>\ntrenches to defend their land. The ideological heart of the resistance is rooted in<br \/>\n<strong>national self-determination<\/strong>, not in liberal cultural experiments imported from abroad.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Is Russia Really Conservative? The Myth of Russian Nationalism<\/h2>\n<p>In parallel, many Western conservatives \u2014 disgusted with their own collapsing borders, moral relativism, and<br \/>\ncultural decay \u2014 have emotionally projected their hopes onto Russia. Kremlin messaging encourages this by wrapping<br \/>\nits foreign policy in \u201ctraditional values\u201d language.<\/p>\n<p>Yet if we examine the <strong>actual policies of the Russian Federation<\/strong>, a different picture emerges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Memory laws<\/strong> and bans on historical \u201crevisionism\u201d regulate which interpretations of history are legal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Independent nationalist parties<\/strong> and movements inside Russia have been systematically curtailed or banned, replaced by carefully managed \u201cpatriotic\u201d projects loyal to the Kremlin.<\/li>\n<li>The economy remains heavily <strong>state-directed<\/strong> and dominated by oligarchic networks, not by free-market conservative principles.<\/li>\n<li>Despite conservative rhetoric, Russia has allowed policies that progressive Western states use as markers of social liberalization (such as certain forms of same-sex adoption and service), while primarily using \u201canti-LGBT\u201d narratives as tools of foreign policy and domestic mobilization.<\/li>\n<li>President Putin repeatedly frames his vision as a <strong>multipolar, global order<\/strong>, which is a sort of alternative globalism rather than a retreat into local, traditional, limited government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is not classical <strong>national conservatism<\/strong>. It is a blend of<br \/>\n<strong>post-Soviet statism, imperial nostalgia, and managed ideology<\/strong> wearing a conservative mask. The Russian Sympathizer Trap for Western Conservatives<\/h2>\n<p>Because of this confusion, many Western conservatives have fallen into what we called<br \/>\n<a title=\"The Russian Sympathizer Trap article\" href=\"https:\/\/watchman.news\/de\/2023\/03\/the-russian-sympathizer-trap-to-disarm-traditional-conservatives\/\"><br \/>\nthe Russian sympathizer trap<br \/>\n<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They see the West\u2019s moral and social collapse and assume anything opposing it must be \u201con their side.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>They accept Kremlin propaganda that equates Ukrainian nationalism with \u201cNazism,\u201d ignoring that it is precisely nationalism and conservatism that Moscow fears most.<\/li>\n<li>They end up rhetorically supporting an authoritarian, globalist-minded state that <strong>crushes genuine nationalist opposition within its own borders<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In doing so, they unintentionally help to erase the memory of the<br \/>\n<strong>right-wing, nationalist Ukrainians<\/strong> who were first to stand in front of the Berkut riot police,<br \/>\nfirst to seize buildings in the regions, and first to volunteer for battalions when Russian forces invaded.<\/p>\n<p>The men who were told they were fighting for <strong>Ukraine, faith, and freedom<\/strong> are now posthumously told<br \/>\nthey were \u201creally\u201d fighting for liberalism. Meanwhile, those who call themselves conservative abroad are urged to<br \/>\nidentify with the very power that sought to crush them. That inversion is not an accident \u2014 it is a deliberate part<br \/>\nof the information war.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion: Restoring the Record for Those Who Fell<\/h2>\n<p>The narrative of <strong>Ukrainian nationalism vs Russian nationalism<\/strong> has been systematically blurred.<br \/>\nOn one side, a genuinely nationalist movement has been rebranded as \u201cliberal.\u201d On the other, a statist, imperial<br \/>\nproject has been rebranded as \u201cconservative.\u201d The result is confusion among traditional conservatives who no longer<br \/>\nrecognize their own ideological reflection on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p>The record needs to be restored:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The early and most decisive stages of <strong>Euromaidan<\/strong> were driven by <strong>Ukrainian right-wing nationalists<\/strong>, not by cosmopolitan liberals.<\/li>\n<li>Russia\u2019s talk of \u201cNazis\u201d is not a serious political analysis, but a propaganda label for any nationalism it does not control.<\/li>\n<li>The frontline defenders of Ukraine are not dying for pride parades or EU bureaucrats; they are dying for <strong>sovereignty, homeland, and identity<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Russia\u2019s so-called \u201cconservatism\u201d is better understood as <strong>managed imperial globalism<\/strong>, hostile to authentic local nationalism both at home and abroad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To forget these realities is to betray the <strong>fighters and defenders of Ukraine<\/strong> twice \u2014 once in their<br \/>\nlives and again in their memory.
