A Holy Lent Begins<\/h1>\n

In Prayerful Agreement with All Christendom<\/h3>\n

Beloved in Christ,<\/p>\n

As we enter the sacred fast of Lent<\/strong>, we do so not in isolation, but in agreement with all Christendom throughout the world<\/strong>. From East to West, across ancient liturgies and faithful assemblies, the Church humbles herself together in prayer, fasting, repentance, and renewed devotion.<\/p>\n

This holy season leads us toward Easter \u2014 the fulfillment of the Feast of Passover<\/strong> \u2014 when Christ, our true Paschal Lamb, was offered and rose in victory. The dating of Easter itself reflects this fulfillment, as it is historically calculated in relation to Passover. What was foreshadowed in Egypt is fulfilled in Jerusalem. What was typified in the lamb is completed in Christ.<\/p>\n

Lent is not sorrow for sorrow\u2019s sake \u2014 it is preparation for glory.<\/p>\n

\n

Christ Commands Seasons of Fasting<\/h1>\n

When questioned why His disciples did not fast as rigorously as others, Christ answered:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe days will come when the Bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.\u201d
(Matthew 9:15<\/a>; cf. Mark 2:20<\/a>; Luke 5:35<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In this statement, He establishes a new covenant pattern in which fasting increases after the Ascension, not decreases. The Church lives in the days when the Bridegroom is hidden from sight, and therefore we fast \u2014 not as despair, but as longing.<\/p>\n

Lent is the Bride\u2019s preparation.<\/p>\n

As we walk this path together at St Andrew\u2019s Orthodox Church of the Culdees<\/strong> (learn more about our identity as the Bride of Christ at Culdee: Spouses of God \/ Ceili D\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> \u2192<\/em> https:\/\/celticorthodoxy.com\/2024\/02\/culdee-spouses-of-god-prophecy-ceili-de-meaning-spouse-of-god\/<\/a>), we remember that this fast is not merely abstinence \u2014 it is preparation for union.*<\/p>\n

\n

Sacred Time Practiced in the Apostolic Church<\/h1>\n

The Apostles themselves continued this rhythm of sacred time.<\/p>\n

The New Testament records:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Corporate fasting<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cAs they ministered to the Lord, and fasted\u2026\u201d (Acts 13:2\u20133<\/a>; 14:23<\/a>)
\u2022 Appointed gatherings<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cUpon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together\u2026\u201d (Acts 20:7<\/a>; 1 Corinthians 16:2<\/a>)
\u2022 Instruction not to neglect assemblies<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cNot forsaking the assembling of ourselves together\u2026\u201d (Hebrews 10:25<\/a>)
\u2022 Freedom to honor days unto the Lord<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cOne man esteemeth one day above another\u2026 Let every man be fully persuaded\u2026 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord.\u201d (Romans 14:5\u20136<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Rather than abolishing holy days, Saint Paul forbids schism over them. Sacred time was not erased \u2014 it was fulfilled and rightly ordered in Christ.<\/p>\n

\n

The Ashes and the Palm Branch Connection<\/h1>\n

Fire, Tabernacle, Lamb, and Resurrection<\/h3>\n

Bij St Andrew\u2019s Orthodox Church of the Culdees<\/strong>, we observe the meaningful tradition of using ashes made from palm branches<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

These palms carry layered biblical meaning:<\/p>\n

1. The Feast of Tabernacles<\/h3>\n

At Sukkot, Israel waved palm branches and dwelt in booths, remembering God\u2019s provision in the wilderness (Leviticus 23:40\u201343<\/a>). Each year they cried:<\/p>\n

\u201cHosanna\u201d \u2014 Hoshana \/ Yahsha Ana \u2014 \u201cSave us now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Gospel proclaims:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe Word became flesh and tabernacled among us.\u201d (John 1:14<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Christ fulfills Tabernacles. He is the One who dwelt among us.<\/p>\n

2. The Entry of the Lamb<\/h3>\n

Those same palms were raised when Christ rode into Jerusalem on a donkey \u2014 the day of the selecting of the Lamb \u2014 and the people cried again:<\/p>\n

\u201cHosanna!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He entered as King, yet also as the Lamb who would be consumed upon the altar of the Cross \u2014 our Passover fulfilled.<\/p>\n

3. Ashes of Purification<\/h3>\n

These sacred branches, once waved in rejoicing, are burned and reduced to ashes. The ashes mark our foreheads at the beginning of Lent.<\/p>\n

Victory becomes purification.<\/p>\n

Hosanna becomes repentance.<\/p>\n

Palm becomes ash.<\/p>\n

Scripture reminds us:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cFor if the ashes of a heifer\u2026 sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh\u2026\u201d
\u2014 Hebrews 9:13<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In the Hebrew tradition (Numbers 19<\/a>), ashes were mixed with water to sanctify the unclean. Fire transformed sacrifice; ash sealed purification.<\/p>\n

Thus the Lenten ash is not superstition \u2014 it is scriptural symbolism fulfilled in Christ.<\/p>\n

\n

Incense in Every Place<\/h1>\n

We also remember the prophetic word:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIn every place incense shall be offered unto My Name\u2026\u201d
\u2014 Malachi 1:11<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lent is not mere abstinence \u2014 it is intensified worship. As our fasting ascends, so does our prayer, like incense before the throne of God.<\/p>\n

\n

Walking Toward Pascha<\/h1>\n

As we begin this Lenten pilgrimage:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Let us fast as those awaiting the Bridegroom.
\u2022 Let us keep incense rising.
\u2022 Let us honor sacred time without division.
\u2022 Let us remember that the ashes speak of cleansing and renewal.
\u2022 Let us prepare for the Paschal fulfillment of Passover in Christ our Lamb.<\/p>\n

We walk together with the historic Church, awaiting the radiant dawn of Resurrection.<\/p>\n

May this Lent be a season of holy fire, purification, and joyful expectation.<\/p>\n
