In his historic \u201cCornerstone Speech,\u201d Confederate Vice President Alexander H. Stephens<\/strong> laid bare not only the ideological foundations of the Confederate States of America (CSA), but also a wider constitutional hope: that all the states of the former Union might one day recognize and return to the principles upon which the Confederacy was founded<\/strong>. Far from merely a Southern rebellion, the CSA saw itself as the true heir to the Founding Fathers’ vision<\/strong>, aiming to preserve what it believed was the legitimate federal compact of 1776 and 1787<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Stephens famously declared:<\/p>\n

This was not mere rhetoric.
