From the rising of the sun to its going down, believers invoke the Holy Name of Jesus\u2014calling upon Him for mercy, help, and salvation. Far from being a later custom, this direct address to the Lord Jesus is deeply <strong data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"742\">biblical<\/strong>, expressed throughout Scripture and faithfully preserved in the Orthodox tradition.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"894\"><strong data-start=\"832\" data-end=\"894\">Examples of Praying Directly to Jesus in Christian Liturgy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"896\" data-end=\"1077\">From the earliest centuries, the Church has preserved prayers that speak directly to the Lord Jesus. These are not innovations, but faithful continuations of the scriptural pattern:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1079\" data-end=\"2191\">\n<li data-start=\"1079\" data-end=\"1282\">\n<p data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1282\"><strong data-start=\"1081\" data-end=\"1121\">The Jesus Prayer (Eastern Orthodox):<\/strong><br data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1124\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1187\">Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.<\/em>\u201d \u2014 drawn from the blind man\u2019s cry in <em data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1234\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Luke18\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 18<\/a><\/em> och <em data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1251\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Mark10%3A47\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 10:47<\/a><\/em>, repeated in unceasing prayer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1539\">\n<p data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1539\"><strong data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1332\">The Kyrie Eleison (Greek and Latin Rites):<\/strong><br data-start=\"1332\" data-end=\"1335\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"1338\" data-end=\"1387\">\u039a\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5 \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd \u00b7 Christe \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd \u00b7 \u039a\u03cd\u03c1\u03b9\u03b5 \u1f10\u03bb\u03ad\u03b7\u03c3\u03bf\u03bd<\/em>\u201d \u2014<br data-start=\"1390\" data-end=\"1393\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1451\">Lord have mercy \u00b7 Christ have mercy \u00b7 Lord have mercy<\/em>. \u201d<br data-start=\"1453\" data-end=\"1456\" \/>The simplest corporate invocation of Jesus, used in every Divine Liturgy or Mass.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1541\" data-end=\"1742\">\n<p data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1742\"><strong data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1592\">The Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Western liturgy):<\/strong><br data-start=\"1592\" data-end=\"1595\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"1598\" data-end=\"1741\">O Lord Jesus Christ, only-begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1868\">\n<p data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1868\"><strong data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1764\">The Agnus Dei:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"1767\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"1770\" data-end=\"1867\">O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us \u2026 grant us thy peace.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1870\" data-end=\"2023\">\n<p data-start=\"1872\" data-end=\"2023\"><strong data-start=\"1872\" data-end=\"1927\">Eastern Hymn \u2018O Only-Begotten Son and Word of God\u2019:<\/strong><br data-start=\"1927\" data-end=\"1930\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"2022\">Thou who, being immortal, didst condescend to be incarnate \u2026 O Christ our God, save us.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2025\" data-end=\"2191\">\n<p data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2191\"><strong data-start=\"2027\" data-end=\"2066\">Biblical prayers echoed in worship:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2066\" data-end=\"2069\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"2072\" data-end=\"2103\">Lord Jesus, receive my spirit<\/em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Acts7%3A59\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 7:59<\/a>),<br data-start=\"2117\" data-end=\"2120\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"2123\" data-end=\"2141\">Come, Lord Jesus<\/em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Revelation22%3A20\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rev 22:20<\/a>),<br data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2158\" \/>\u201c<em data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2176\">Lord, save me<\/em>\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Matthew14%3A30\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt 14:30<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2193\" data-end=\"2475\">These forms\u2014public and private\u2014show that <strong data-start=\"2234\" data-end=\"2328\">addressing Christ directly in prayer has always been part of the Church\u2019s living tradition<\/strong>, perfectly in harmony with the Scriptures. They embody the confidence of His own promise: <em data-start=\"2420\" data-end=\"2475\">\u201cIf ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2477\" data-end=\"2516\"><strong data-start=\"2481\" data-end=\"2516\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/John14%3A13-14\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:13\u201314<\/a> \u2014 The Key Passage<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2518\" data-end=\"2706\">\n<p data-start=\"2520\" data-end=\"2706\"><strong data-start=\"2520\" data-end=\"2704\">\u201cAnd whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.<br data-start=\"2623\" data-end=\"2626\" \/>If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.\u201d \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/John14%3A13-14\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:13-14<\/a> (KJV)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2708\" data-end=\"2994\">The original Greek includes the word <em data-start=\"2745\" data-end=\"2749\">me<\/em> (\u03bc\u03b5) in verse 14 \u2014 <em data-start=\"2769\" data-end=\"2831\">\u201cIf ye shall ask <strong data-start=\"2787\" data-end=\"2793\">Me<\/strong> any thing in my name, I will do it.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2831\" data-end=\"2834\" \/>Here the Lord Himself invites the faithful to speak to Him directly. The Son acts, the Father is glorified, and the Spirit unites our prayer in divine harmony.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2996\" data-end=\"3040\"><strong data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3040\">Direct Prayers to Jesus in Scripture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3042\" data-end=\"3262\"><strong data-start=\"3042\" data-end=\"3058\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Acts7%3A59-60\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Acts 7:59-60<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cAnd they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, <em data-start=\"3117\" data-end=\"3149\">Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.<\/em> \u2026 <em data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3193\">Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.<\/em>\u201d<br data-start=\"3194\" data-end=\"3197\" \/>Stephen\u2019s final words are direct petitions to the risen Christ.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3264\" data-end=\"3455\"><strong data-start=\"3264\" data-end=\"3288\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/2%20Corinthians12%3A8-9\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 Corinthians 12:8-9<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cFor this thing I besought the Lord thrice\u2026 And he said unto me, <em data-start=\"3356\" data-end=\"3390\">My grace is sufficient for thee.<\/em>\u201d<br data-start=\"3391\" data-end=\"3394\" \/>Paul prays to the Lord Jesus and receives a personal reply.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3457\" data-end=\"3666\"><strong data-start=\"3457\" data-end=\"3478\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/1%20Corinthians1%3A2\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Corinthians 1:2<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201c\u2026with all that in every place <em data-start=\"3512\" data-end=\"3557\">call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord<\/em>. \u201d<br data-start=\"3559\" data-end=\"3562\" \/>\u201cCalling on the name\u201d is a biblical phrase for invocation\u2014proof that the early Church prayed to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3668\" data-end=\"3852\"><strong data-start=\"3668\" data-end=\"3685\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Mark10%3A47-48\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 10:47-48<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cJesus, thou Son of David, <em data-start=\"3715\" data-end=\"3734\">have mercy on me!<\/em> \u2026 <em data-start=\"3737\" data-end=\"3775\">Thou Son of David, have mercy on me!<\/em>\u201d<br data-start=\"3776\" data-end=\"3779\" \/>Bartimaeus\u2019 plea became the ancient <em data-start=\"3815\" data-end=\"3830\">Kyrie eleison<\/em>\u2014\u201cLord, have mercy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3854\" data-end=\"4028\"><strong data-start=\"3854\" data-end=\"3874\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Matthew20%3A30-34\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matthew 20:30-34<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201c<em data-start=\"3878\" data-end=\"3924\">Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.<\/em> \u2026 And Jesus had compassion on them.\u201d<br data-start=\"3961\" data-end=\"3964\" \/>Two blind men pray directly to Jesus, recognizing Him as Lord.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4030\" data-end=\"4165\"><strong data-start=\"4030\" data-end=\"4043\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Luke17%3A5\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luke 17:5<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cAnd the apostles said unto the Lord, <em data-start=\"4084\" data-end=\"4105\">Increase our faith.<\/em>\u201d<br data-start=\"4106\" data-end=\"4109\" \/>Faith itself is requested from Christ as divine giver.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4167\" data-end=\"4352\"><strong data-start=\"4167\" data-end=\"4187\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Revelation22%3A20\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Revelation 22:20<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 \u201cHe which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. <em data-start=\"4260\" data-end=\"4288\">Even so, come, Lord Jesus.<\/em>\u201d<br data-start=\"4289\" data-end=\"4292\" \/>The final prayer of Scripture is addressed to Jesus Himself.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4354\" data-end=\"4391\"><strong data-start=\"4358\" data-end=\"4391\">Early Christian Understanding<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4393\" data-end=\"4462\">From the first century onward, the Church invoked Christ in prayer.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4463\" data-end=\"4699\">\n<li data-start=\"4463\" data-end=\"4514\">\n<p data-start=\"4465\" data-end=\"4514\"><strong data-start=\"4465\" data-end=\"4488\">Ignatius of Antioch<\/strong> called Jesus \u201cour God.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4515\" data-end=\"4595\">\n<p data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"4595\"><strong data-start=\"4517\" data-end=\"4531\">Athanasius<\/strong> taught that believers \u201cinvoke the Son as they do the Father.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4596\" data-end=\"4699\">\n<p data-start=\"4598\" data-end=\"4699\">The repeated cry <strong data-start=\"4615\" data-end=\"4637\">\u201cLord, have mercy\u201d<\/strong> in liturgy comes directly from these Gospel prayers to Jesus.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"4701\" data-end=\"4739\"><strong data-start=\"4705\" data-end=\"4739\">The Balanced Pattern of Prayer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4741\" data-end=\"4797\">The New Testament shows harmony rather than restriction:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"4798\" data-end=\"4996\">\n<li data-start=\"4798\" data-end=\"4864\">\n<p data-start=\"4801\" data-end=\"4864\"><strong data-start=\"4801\" data-end=\"4818\">To the Father<\/strong> \u2014 as Jesus taught (\u201cOur Father,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Matthew6%3A9\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt 6:9<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4865\" data-end=\"4931\">\n<p data-start=\"4868\" data-end=\"4931\"><strong data-start=\"4868\" data-end=\"4887\">Through the Son<\/strong> \u2014 in His name and authority (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/John14%3A13\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John 14:13<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"4932\" data-end=\"4996\">\n<p data-start=\"4935\" data-end=\"4996\"><strong data-start=\"4935\" data-end=\"4952\">In the Spirit<\/strong> \u2014 who empowers and intercedes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibleserver.com\/KJV\/Romans8%3A26\" class=\"bibleserver extern\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rom 8:26<\/a>).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p data-start=\"4998\" data-end=\"5145\">Yet believers also spoke <strong data-start=\"5023\" data-end=\"5046\">directly to the Son<\/strong>, who is one with the Father. Prayer to Jesus glorifies the Father through the Son\u2019s divine action.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5147\" data-end=\"5165\"><strong data-start=\"5151\" data-end=\"5165\">Slutsats<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5167\" data-end=\"5531\">To pray directly to the Lord Jesus is not a new practice but the natural expression of apostolic faith.
