In recent years, a quote attributed to Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest<\/span><\/span><\/strong> has been widely dismissed online as a modern invention:<\/p>\n

\u201cThese boys stayed with me\u2026 and better Confederates did not live.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Critics claimed the phrase originated in late-20th-century heritage activism.<\/p>\n

That claim is false<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The quotation \u2014 with minor period variations \u2014 appears in Reconstruction-era primary sources<\/strong>, is reinforced by Forrest\u2019s own sworn Congressional testimony, and is supported by both Southern and Northern wartime accounts.<\/p>\n

This article documents that trail and honors the late H. K. Edgerton<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, who courageously repeated this history publicly when many preferred silence.<\/p>\n

Forrest\u2019s Congressional Testimony: His 45 Black Confederates<\/h2>\n

In June 1871, Forrest testified under oath before the Joint Select Committee to Inquire into the Condition of Affairs in the Late Insurrectionary States<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Forrest stated that he took approximately 45 Black men<\/strong> from his plantation with him at the beginning of the war, promising them freedom regardless of outcome if they stayed with him. He further testified that he later issued emancipation papers to them before the conflict ended.<\/p>\n

These men served primarily as teamsters, drivers, attendants, and headquarters support.<\/p>\n

Reconstruction Newspapers Preserve Forrest\u2019s Praise<\/h2>\n

The famous wording appears in an August 28, 1868 interview published in the Cincinnati Commercial<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, where Forrest said:<\/p>\n

\u201cThese boys stayed with me, drove my teams, and better Confederates did not live.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

During his July 5, 1875 reconciliation speech in Memphis, Forrest again spoke of the forty-seven enslaved men who went with him (forty-five still present at surrender) and repeated the same sentiment.<\/p>\n

Some contemporary papers paraphrased this as:<\/p>\n

\u201cNo finer Confederates ever fought.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The phrasing varies; the meaning does not.<\/p>\n

\n

Named Black Confederates and Contemporary Witnesses<\/h2>\n

Beyond Forrest\u2019s own words, multiple firsthand accounts confirm Black participation alongside his command.<\/p>\n

Nim Wilkes<\/h3>\n

Black Confederate Nim Wilkes<\/span><\/span><\/strong> stated:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI was in every battle General Forrest fought after leaving Columbia\u2026 I was mustered out at Gainesville (May 1865).\u201d<\/em>
(Rollins, 1994)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

Louis Napoleon Nelson<\/h3>\n

Louis Napoleon Nelson<\/span><\/span><\/strong> served the Confederate States of America at Shiloh, Lookout Mountain, Brice\u2019s Crossroads, and Vicksburg with the 7th Tennessee Cavalry under Forrest.<\/p>\n

Sent originally to care for his master\u2019s wounded son, Nelson picked up the rifle and continued fighting. After the war, Nelson and his former master became close friends, their farms bordering each other (Winbush, 1996).<\/p>\n

\n

Northern Confirmation: Lt. Col. Parkhurst<\/h3>\n

Even Union officers recorded Black Confederates in Forrest\u2019s ranks.<\/p>\n

Charles S. Parkhurst<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, reporting on Forrest\u2019s July 13, 1862 attack at Murfreesboro, wrote:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe forces attacking my camp were the First Regiment Texas Rangers, a battalion of the First Georgia Rangers\u2026 and quite a number of Negroes attached to the Texas and Georgia troops, who were armed and equipped, and took part in the several engagements with my forces during the day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is a Northern battlefield eyewitness account.<\/p>\n

\n

Thomas Y. Cartwright and Better Confederates Did Not Live<\/em><\/h2>\n

Civil War historian Thomas Y. Cartwright<\/span><\/span><\/strong> later titled his work Better Confederates Did Not Live<\/em>, drawing directly from these Reconstruction-era sources. His contribution to Journal of Confederate History, Vol. XI (Black Southerners in Gray)<\/em> helped preserve this material for modern readers.<\/p>\n

Cartwright did not invent the phrase \u2014 he documented it.<\/p>\n

\n

What Forrest Meant \u2014 and What He Did Not Mean<\/h2>\n

Historical clarity matters.<\/p>\n

These Black men were:<\/p>\n

    enslaved or formerly enslaved<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    serving largely in logistical and support roles<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    not formally enlisted soldiers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Yet Forrest explicitly called them among his best Confederates<\/strong>, praising their loyalty, endurance, and service.<\/p>\n

    In Forrest\u2019s own words, Black Southerners who stood with him were counted among his finest.<\/p>\n

    Edgerton Was Right \u2014 and He Was Dismissed<\/h2>\n

    Before his recent passing, H. K. Edgerton publicly repeated this history and these quotes \u2014 only to be told they were fabricated.<\/p>\n

    They were not.<\/p>\n

    Edgerton stood on Congressional testimony, Reconstruction newspapers, named veterans, and even Union officers\u2019 reports.<\/p>\n

    History now confirms his position.<\/p>\n

    Why This Matters<\/h2>\n

    This is not about romanticizing war.<\/p>\n

    It is about resisting selective memory.<\/p>\n

    Black Southerners lived inside a difficult and layered reality of coercion, loyalty, survival, and regional identity. Forrest\u2019s words \u2014 uncomfortable to modern ears \u2014 are part of that historical record.<\/p>\n

    Suppressing them does not heal wounds.<\/p>\n

    Truth does.<\/p>\n
