It was first published in prose form by William Reeves in the Appendix to Archbishop Colton’s Visitation of Derry (1850). Reeves sourced it from an Insular manuscript collection (‘Appendix D’), without claiming it was penned by Columba himself, and suggested it reflects broader Columban monastic piety. The central instruction reads simply: ‘Fervour in singing the office for the dead, as if every faithful dead was a particular friend of thine. Hymns for souls to be sung standing. Let thy vigils be constant from eve to eve…’. This theme is echoed in several other early Irish liturgical manuscripts—most notably the late 8th/early 9th-century Stowe (Lorrha) Missal, which includes funeral offices and divine liturgy fragments; the 8th–9th-century St. Gall fragments containing a Mass of the Dead; the 7th-century Bobbio Missal with an Irish order of baptism; and the Bangor Antiphonary with commemorative canticles—demonstrating that this devotion to praying liturgically for the dead was widespread in early Celtic Christianity.

You may also reference other rules of the Culdees such as of St Maelruan, or Chrodegan, or Comgall, or Columbanus.

The Rule of Saint Columba (Columcille) Rule of Saint Columba (Columcille), the Abbot of Iona, dates from the 6th century and forms the spiritual basis for the Order of Saint Columcille and the Crane Abbey. Be alone in a separate place near a chief city, if thy conscience is not prepared to be in […]

[3556,3584,3582,3553,3567,3569
755,1638,1543,2264,1469,4047,1802,1095,4048,3936,1749
post-146318","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-literature-celtic-church","category-ecclesiastical","category-legitimist-philosophy","category-literature","category-priory-of-salem","category-theology-institute","tag-celtic-church","tag-celtic-monasticism","tag-celtic-monks","tag-celtic-orthodox","tag-celtic-orthodox-church","tag-celtic-prayers","tag-celtic-saints","tag-orthodox-church-of-the-culdees","tag-prayers-for-the-dead","tag-rule-of-st-columba","tag-saint-columba
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
