Receiving the Word: How Meditation Makes the Word Effectual<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Introduction: When Hearing Becomes Receiving<\/h3>\n

In the parable of the sower, Christ said that the seed is the Word of God<\/em>. Some fell on stony ground, some among thorns, and others on good soil. But only the word that was received<\/strong> \u0456 kept<\/strong> bore fruit (Matthew 13:19\u201323<\/a>).<\/p>\n

So what does it mean to receive<\/em> the Word? The Apostle wrote,<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cYe received the word of God which ye heard of us\u2026 and it worketh effectually also in you that believe.\u201d<\/em> (1 Thessalonians 2:13<\/a>, KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Greek implies a continual welcoming\u2014a Word that is spoken again and again<\/strong>, meditated upon, internalized, and lived. Faith comes by hearing<\/strong>, not by hearing once (Romans 10:17<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\n

1. Biblical Meditation Means Repetition<\/h3>\n

In Hebrew, hagah<\/em> means \u201cto murmur, to utter, to rehearse quietly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThis book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night.\u201d<\/em> (Joshua 1:8<\/a>, KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Notice: not just in the mind<\/em>, but in the mouth.<\/em> True meditation is re-speaking God\u2019s Word<\/strong> until it becomes woven into thought, prayer, and behavior.
\nIt’s logical to assume memorization only came through repetition, which is the pre-requisite of meditation soo you may think on those words. It wasn’t just passing on to next passages without taking a thought on what was read. This can be a verse that was repeated (as much of the liturgy is).<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways.\u201d<\/em> (Psalm 119:15<\/a>, KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Repetition is how the Word moves from the ear to the heart.<\/p>\n

\n

2. The Word as Living Seed<\/h3>\n

The seed cannot take root if it only brushes the surface of the soil. Likewise, the Word does not take root if it\u2019s heard once and forgotten.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThen cometh the wicked one, and taketh away the word out of their hearts.\u201d<\/em> (Matthew 13:19<\/a>, KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

When we repeat<\/strong>, ponder<\/strong>, \u0456 apply<\/strong>, we are pressing the Word deeper into the soil of the soul\u2014making it \u201ceffectually work.\u201d Each meditation is like watering the seed again, keeping it alive against distraction and doubt.<\/p>\n

\n

3. Speaking the Word Is Part of Believing It<\/h3>\n
\n

\u201cI believed, and therefore have I spoken.\u201d<\/em> (2 Corinthians 4:13<\/a>, KJV)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Faith matures when the tongue agrees with the heart. Saying the Word again\u2014whether aloud in prayer, or quietly through repetition\u2014strengthens conviction.<\/p>\n

This is why Orthodox Christians pray \u201cLord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me\u201d<\/em>\u2014not as a superstition, but as a continual reception of the Word made flesh.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

4. Digesting the Word Like Bread<\/h3>\n

Jeremiah said, \u201cThy words were found, and I did eat them.\u201d<\/em> (Jeremiah 15:16<\/a>).
When we meditate on the Word, we chew<\/strong> \u0456 digest<\/strong> it until it becomes part of us. The process of re-stating and re-praying Scripture is spiritual digestion\u2014it turns doctrine into nourishment and understanding into transformation.<\/p>\n

\n

5. Connection to the Jesus Prayer and the Celtic Practice<\/h3>\n

The Jesus Prayer\u2014repeated with a prayer rope\u2014is a living form of this biblical meditation. Likewise, the Celtic monks of Bangor and Iona recited Psalms day and night, bowing at every \u201cBlessed art Thou.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their repetition was not vain but effectual<\/strong>, anchoring the Word in heart and body. It was a way of receiving Christ continually\u2014the Word who works within.<\/p>\n

Repetition + faith = abiding.<\/p>\n

\n

6. Repetition and Reception Are One<\/h3>\n

Modern life tempts believers to skim<\/em> the Word, not receive<\/em> it. But the psalmist said:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cI will delight myself in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word.\u201d<\/em> (Psalm 119:16<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Remembering comes from rehearsing. The Word becomes real through reflection, comparison, and restatement. That\u2019s why the Church, in every age, has read, sung, and prayed Scripture again and again\u2014\u201cmeditating day and night.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

7. A Summary Thought<\/h3>\n
\n

Meditation is repetition with faith \u2014 the continual speaking, hearing, and welcoming of God\u2019s Word until it bears fruit in the heart.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

This is how the Word \u201cworks effectually\u201d in us.<\/p>\n

Let us keep receiving, re-speaking, and rejoicing in the living Word of Christ.<\/p>\n
