THE WORLD OVER THE LAST WEEK
May 16th 2009. The ongoing Pakistan war with the Taliban
continues to mushroom the civilian refugees to 150,000. A
humanitarian nightmare. And more civilians killed in Afghanistan
as more USA troops are deployed there. The blood-bath in Sir
Lanka continues as the Government fight the Tiger rebels.
......
The Pope returns from his Middle-East pilgrimage. He says a
Palestinian State should be built. The tension between Jews and
the Vatican is tense and large.
......
The Arctic ice cap is melting faster than ever predicted. Three
British scientists finish there long detailed study. 1600
observations of one kind or another were done, and they say at
the present rate of disappearance of the ice cap, it could be all
gone in 5 years!
......
Still in Britain. The British are being rocked by the latest MP
scandal which is how the MPs have been using tax money for
expenses like dog and cat food. The people are up-in-arms about
it all, and the Government says changes of law regarding the
public access to MPs spending will be forthcoming. Here in Canada
it is already in place, and anyone can see on-line what their MPs
are spending, where and how and why. Surprisingly I would think,
that was not the case in Britain, but no doubt now it will become
so as it is in Canada.

Obama blocks the release of at least 40 photos (and there are
they say many hundreds more) of prison torture tactics by the USA
since 9/11. Mr.O man thinks it will not sit well with USA people
for the present fighting in Afghanistan if the photos are
released. He is very correct on that.
......
Staying with Pres.O - he is to give an address at the famous
Roman Catholic Notre Dame University. Many are against him
because of his stand on freedom of choice on the abortion issue.
As one man said, "If President Obama wants to debate the issue,
it is very simple: "REPENT! Period, debate over."
And of course that man is quite correct. Obama is a product of
his political up-bringing and lack of sound Bible theology. In
this case the Roman Catholic church is very correct. Why they are
letting him speak to the students and giving him an "honourary
degree" is beyond my thinking on the subject. The office of
President should NOT take first place over the truth of God's
word on when life begins. I give Notre Dame University two thumbs
down on this episode coming up.
......
Sony Electronics have one massive LOSS. I think so, as people are
out of work and just cannot buy fancy electronic gadgets.
......
USA - 600 Trillion DERIVATIVES trade reform is impending - more
open, less secret behind closed doors stuff. The USA Government
is to give more oversight into it all.
......
1900 GM and Chrysler dealerships close down. 100,000 jobs gone to
never never land, and they say more dealerships will yet close,
as the two big USA auto firms have to down-size and re-shape
their production if they are going to not disappear themselves
forever in never never land. They are talking about more "out-
sourcing" - cars made outside the USA and then brought into the
USA.
......
Marathon running? They have now proven it does put stress on the
heart, but a week after the Marathon run the heart is back to
normal. Personally I'm not sure why people want to run that kind
of distance on a regular basis.
......
The Hubble Space Telescope repair job is going okay they say.
About half way through. Some new stuff installed will give even
more insight into the Universe.
......
Then we have had this week EUROPE launching their new Space
Telescope that will out-do even the Hubble. Largest Space
telescope ever to be put up. Yes, Europe has the ability to space
launch, if you did not know.
......
The Pine-beetle in Western Canada has not been killed in the
coldest winter for quite some time. It can only be killed if it
gets to -30 for two weeks or more. Investigation into the trees
shows the lava if well and healthy. So the fight to preserve the
forests of Western Canada is still on.
......
USA retail figures are still down and staying down. To be fully
expected as people are still loosing their jobs by the hundreds
if not thousands.
......
On an upbeat finishing to the line for this week. A 3 year old
FILLY won the Preakness horse race. First time in 85 years that a
Girl beat the Boys in this second of the Triple crown
Thoroughbred USA horse races. And of course then, there will be
no Triple Crown winner again. It seems like ancient history since
there was. Coming second, and blasting from the back once more
was the Canadian horse "Mind That Bird" who won the Ken. Derby.
If there had been another 20 yards to the race, he would have won
it. But good for the Gal, I'm a little prejudiced as my horse
Goldie in a Mare.
