BIRTH and the KINGDOM by Pastor Bob Hallstrom If you are familiar with the concept of Dualism, you should understand that it has permeated the church and has led it to disregard the material world for the world of the spirit, and, in the case of the modernists, they profess the world of matter and renounce the law of God. Those who disregard the material world are what we call antinomians. Anti-nomians are those who have no use for any of God's laws. For them the gospel has no law for the material world, because to them this world must perish and therefore it must be renounced. To them the mandate to subdue the earth given in Genesis is non-existent. To them the promises concerning a restored creation of the world, and, at the end of the age, the promise of a resurrection body, are not taken with any degree of seriousness. To them the world and the flesh are linked with the devil to form and an unholy trinity. So according to dualism theology, the spirit world and the material world are alien worlds and cannot be connected. Therefore the material world has its own source of law, and the consequence of that theology has been disastrous. You see, the abandonment of God's order has lead to a social gospel, a gospel that is derived from society -- rather than from God. The results are that it has led to situation ethics, and a morality governed by the experiences of the material moment. But the theology of dualism has so extensively infected the Western world that to write or speak of Christ as a literal king reigning over a literal physical kingdom on earth actually comes as a shock to many people, because to them, never the twain shall meet. However, let us go back and read of the birth of Christ and see what was said about the effect of His coming birth. First of all in Luke 1:26 we find Gabriel, an angel of the Lord, appearing before the virgin Mary who then said unto her in verses 31-33: "... behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. "He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: "And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." At this point, churchmen tell us that this throne and kingdom are spiritual and have no reference to this world, except insofar as men are saved and enter the church. However, there is no sound reason to exclude the plain statement to a physical time and place in history when Christ shall physically return and shall physically reign over the house of Jacob forever. And it should be plain to all that elsewhere in Scripture we are told that Jesus Christ shall be King of kings, and Lord of lords, and therefore, in terms of messianic prophecy, Christ will be the sovereign over all nations. But first He will come as the sovereign Lord to reclaim His kingdom, His property, and His kingdom people -- the people of Israel. After Mary had heard from the angel of the Lord, she went to visit Elizabeth and said to her in Luke 1:48-55: "For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. "For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. "And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. "He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. "He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. "He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. "He hath holpen [laid hold on] his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; "As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever." What has Mary said? Does she not clearly understand that what was to come to pass was a physical changing of things in this world? If you have a cross reference Bible, look at the cross references, look them up and read them, for in so doing you will see that all Mary has done is basically recite Old Testament prophecies on the subject. Thus the Virgin Mary saw a drastic change in the physical order of things. She saw a mighty reversal of things which in principle was accomplished through the coming Messiah, which was her promised Son. This "mighty reversal of things" is not only in overturning the dominion of sin over man, but also is the mighty recreation or restoration of all things in the world under the dominion of the Messiah, the King of kings, and Lord of Lords. So it seems very obvious that Mary understood that mankind would see a mighty reversal of things because of her Son's birth. For, by His strength, the vain imaginations of earthly men would be confounded. The mighty kings and rulers of the earth would be dethroned, and the blessed meek of the Lord exalted. The hungry people of God would be filled, and the rich sinners would be cast out. All of these things are announced by Mary in fulfillment of the prophecies to the patriarchs and prophets that, through the seed of Abraham, through the chosen people of Israel, and through David, Christ would literally possess the whole material earth. Anytime someone comes along and says that although Mary said and believed this, but that a "spiritual" fulfillment was instead intended by God, that person is seriously toying with the plain language of Scripture. What Mary understood and meant is unmistakable. However, if her words can be spiritualized into some non-material fulfillment, then likewise, the creation story and the virgin birth can also be spiritualized into some non-material fulfillment. Either Scripture means what it says, or it means nothing. Obviously, then, a very real and material fulfillment is the only legitimate meaning here, and generally speaking, we can make the following conclusions: 1. The physical earth is the property of Jesus Christ, because He is the messianic King, the very Son of God, as well as the literal physical descendant of the royal Son of David. 2. Christ, as King over the entire physical earth, has the right of eminent domain, that is He can do as He pleases with His physical property. For example, He can turn out the ungodly and give the kingdom to those who obey Him. In this regard, in Matthew 21:43, Jesus plainly stated to the rulers of Jerusalem the following: "Therefore I say unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruit thereof." Christ was not taking about taking some spiritual kingdom from the rulers of Jerusalem. No sir! He was taking about taking the physical rulership of an earthy kingdom from them; and giving this physical rulership to another nation -- not to the church mind you -- but to a literal physical nation of people. I cannot emphasize this enough; this was a very literal taking and giving of a very literal, physical, and earthly kingdom. Thus one purpose of His coming was to dispossess the present leadership of the kingdom of God, and to give His dominion to His people -- His Israel people. A people we have often identified for you as the Anglo-Saxon, Celtic and kindred peoples of the earth. 3. Well what does this mean to us? It means that the people of God must expect Him to sit on and occupy a literal physical throne and rule over His literal physical kingdom consisting originally of the house of Jacob. And it means to us that His physical kingdom will have a set of laws and we will be expected to obey and enforce God's laws -- the literal laws of the kingdom. And finally, we must expect be faithful to the creation mandate given us in Genesis 1:26-28 to physically subdue the earth and to physically exercise dominion over it. 4. And finally, hopefully we all understand that God, through the Messiah, will dethrone all of His enemies. This plainly means that there will be a physical victory over all earthly nations and peoples. Again, does not Scripture clearly prophesy the total physical victory of Jesus Christ and the physical uprooting of the physical kingdoms of man on this earth? Will not the ungodly be openly confounded and turned out? Will not the people of God equally be brought to power and victory over the physical kingdoms of the earth? If not, my brethren, then we better get a new book to read. Because the way I read my Bible, Israel, the covenant people of God, shall be established in full physical power over the kingdoms of this earth. Yes, the miracle of His birth announces a physical as well as a spiritual victory. It announces a restoration of a physical world under the physical leadership of the King of kings, and Lord of lords -- the one, and the only true king over all things. And once again, as we are told in Luke 1:32-33: "He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: "And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end." The birth of Jesus Christ is therefore the confirmation of God's law and a resounding declaration of God's property rights over man and the earth upon which shall be established His physical kingdom.
