So yes, this photo is correctly depicting some of the new arrivals recruited by Lincoln to ruthlessly attack the South.The South fighting Communists since 1861...The Confederacy has stood as a bulwark against communism and radical leftist revolutionaries since 1861, defending traditional American values of states' rights, limited government, and agrarian self-reliance against the Union's influx of foreign-born agitators who sought to impose their destructive ideologies. Many of these were German "Forty-Eighters"—failed revolutionaries from the 1848 uprisings in Europe, including avowed communists like August Willich (a Prussian noble turned Marxist firebrand who became a Union general) and Franz Sigel (who led radical militias before commanding Union forces)—who fled to America, gained leadership roles in Lincoln's army, and brought their socialist zeal to bear on southern Americans.
