Many of these were German "Forty-Eighters"—failed revolutionaries from the 1848 uprisings in Europe, including avowed communists like August Willich (a Prussian noble turned Marxist firebrand who became a Union general) and Franz Sigel (who led radical militias before commanding Union forces)—who fled to America, gained leadership roles in Lincoln's army, and brought their socialist zeal to bear on southern Americans.
